The charming guest rooms have been named after favorite garden flowers, each offering its own
romantic flavor and blooming with wonderful colors and fabrics too. Secondary themes prevail within
the rooms as well, such as a hunt theme in the Ivy Room and a music theme in the Lily Room. The
attention to detail adds an extra note of comfort and elegance. Guests are also drawn to the
alluring atmosphere outside -- the back porch, gardens, gazebo and lily pond all invite leisure.
The location of the inn is ideal and very central to many of Newport's most popular sites, such as the
Cliff Walk, the fabled Mansions, the beaches, and the historic harborfront. Outstanding shops and
restaurants are all closeby.
Welcome to The Old Beach Inn.
This elegant bed and breakfast inn was built in 1879 during Newport's Gilded Age, and
was once the home of the affluent physician, Dr. Steven Powell and his wife, Henrietta.
Dr. Powell was a sea captain during the China Trade and oriental influences are evident
throughout the house. For many years he served as the Commodore of the Newport Yacht Club.
His love of the sea and sailing inspired him to name the house The Anchorage and if
you look closely you might see the green anchor tucked into the highest peak of the house.
Mrs. Powell was originally from New Haven and was the great-granddaughter of Noah Webster
(of dictionary fame). Today their home has found new life as one of Newport's most gracious
inns and is filled with antiques, whimsical touches, and even "treasures" from their ship.![]()
A generous continental breakfast is served daily and includes everything from freshly baked pastries,
homemade granola, fruit salads, fresh-squeezed juices and specially blended coffee. On Sundays a hot
entree is served as well such as a vegetable quiche, an egg casserole or blueberry stuffed french toast.
Guests can also also help themselves to coffee and tea makings throughoutthe day in the guest pantry.
"...filled with unexpected touches to admire or to make you smile."
